How to use wax melts: a beginner's guide
Share
There is something quietly pleasant about coming home to a room that smells like something. Wax melts are how we do that without a lit candle.
If you are new to them, here is everything you need to know.
What are wax melts
Wax melts are small cubes of scented wax that you melt to release fragrance into a room. No wick, no open flame on the wax itself. Just gentle heat, slow scent, and a quiet glow if you want one.
We use soy wax, which is plant-based and cleaner-burning than paraffin. It melts slowly, throws fragrance well, and does not leave behind the soot you sometimes see with traditional candles. Vegan, kinder to your walls, and gentler on your nose.
What you need
Three things to get going:
-
A burner or warmer. This is the piece that holds the wax and provides the heat. You have two choices:
- A ceramic wax melt burner uses an unscented tealight in the base. Flame-driven, ambient glow, traditional ritual.
- An electric wax warmer plugs into the wall. No flame, just a heating element. Safer for bedrooms and offices. Kid and pet-friendly.
- Unscented tealights (only if you are using a ceramic burner). You can find these at any supermarket. Make sure they are unscented, so the only fragrance you smell is the wax melt above.
- Wax melts. Snap off the number of cubes you want from the pack.
That is it.
Step-by-step: how to use a wax melt
With a ceramic burner
- Place your burner on a heat-resistant surface. Away from curtains, kids, and pets.
- Drop one unscented tealight into the base chamber. Light it carefully.
- Snap one or two cubes from your wax melt pack and place them in the top dish.
- Within a few minutes, the wax will start to soften and release fragrance.
- Let it warm for as long as you want the scent in the room. Typically 2 to 4 hours.
- When you are done, snuff the tealight out and let the wax cool fully.
With an electric warmer
- Plug your warmer into a wall outlet.
- Snap one or two cubes into the removable top dish.
- Switch on.
- Within a few minutes, fragrance will fill the room.
- Switch off when you are finished.
Either way, the wax stays in the dish. It does not burn away like a candle.
How long do wax melts last
A single cube typically gives you 8 to 12 hours of fragrance, depending on the size of your room, the strength of the scent, and how long you leave it warming each session. A full pack of six cubes easily lasts a month or more.
When the scent starts to fade, let the wax cool, snap the spent cubes out, and refresh with new ones. No mess.
Care and safety
The basics:
- Always use on a heat-resistant surface
- Never leave a lit tealight unattended
- Keep away from children, pets, curtains, and anything flammable
- Allow the wax to cool fully before changing scents
- Wipe the dish clean between scents if you want a clean transition
For electric warmers, also keep the base dry (never immerse), unplug before cleaning, and keep the cord away from edges where it could catch.
Choosing your first scent
We organise our wax melts by mood, not by ingredient list. That is how most people actually pick.
- Want your room to feel clean and bright? Try Spring Linen or Lemon Zest.
- Want it to feel cosy and quiet? Try Cinnamon Apple or Golden Vanilla.
- Looking for florals? Try French Lavender, Velvet Rose, or Bluebell Meadow.
- Want something slightly mysterious? Try Midnight Gardenia.
If you cannot decide, our Home Fragrance Starter Set includes a Spring Linen pack, an Azure Bloom ceramic burner, and a white ceramic tealight holder. Everything you need to get started in one box.
When to swap scents
Switch whenever your mood, the season, or the weather changes. Most people keep two or three packs on rotation. Florals in spring, warmer notes in winter, crisp fresh scents on washing day.
That is the whole point. Snap, swap, and let your home reflect where you are right now.
