Spring Linen soy wax melt cubes by Scentimelts

Wax melts vs candles: which is right for your home?

Both wax melts and candles do the same job: fill your home with scent. But they go about it in different ways, and one might suit your space, your lifestyle, or your budget better than the other.

Here is how they actually compare.

The quick answer

Wax melts tend to throw more fragrance, cost less per hour, and let you swap scents whenever your mood changes. Candles offer the warmth of an open flame, take less setup, and look beautiful unlit.

If you want strong, switchable scent: wax melts. If you want a flame-lit ritual: candles.

Fragrance throw

"Throw" is how far and strong a scent travels. Wax melts almost always win here. Because the wax is heated indirectly (no flame consuming it), more fragrance oil is released into the room. A single cube can scent a whole living area within minutes.

Candles have to burn through wax to release scent, so throw is typically more localised, especially in larger rooms.

How long they last

A pack of six soy wax melts can deliver 50 to 70+ hours of fragrance combined, depending on how long you warm each cube.

A standard 200g soy candle gives you around 40 hours.

Cost per hour

Wax melts tend to be cheaper per hour of scent. You buy the burner or warmer once, and the melts are inexpensive consumables. Candles bundle the container and wick into every purchase.

Safety

Both need a heat-resistant surface and attention to the basics (don't leave lit flames unattended, keep away from kids and pets). But wax melt setups give you flame-free options:

  • A ceramic wax melt burner still uses an unscented tealight, so there is a small flame, but it sits inside a ceramic chamber away from the wax above.
  • An electric wax warmer has no flame at all. Just a heating element. Safer for bedrooms, offices, and kid- or pet-friendly homes.

Aesthetics

Candles win on the unlit shelf. A beautiful candle sits as a decorative object even when not in use.

Ceramic burners hold their own. Look at our Azure Bloom or Citrus Garden burners: they are objects in their own right, with character even unlit.

Best for...

  • Bedrooms, offices, kid-friendly rooms: electric wax warmers (flame-free).
  • Living rooms, evenings: ceramic burners with tealights for the ritual, or candles for the warmth of an open flame.
  • People who like to switch scents: wax melts. Snap, swap, done.
  • People who love the slow burn of a candle: candles. Pour, light, watch.

Why we focus on wax melts

We started with wax melts because they offer the most flexibility: stronger scent, longer pack life, and the option of flame or flame-free hardware. Plus you can change your mind about scent at any time. Today, vanilla. Tomorrow, citrus. No commitment.

Our candles are launching soon. When they do, you will have both options under the same roof.

Try a starter set
